Where lies the land, to which the ship would go? Far, far ahead is all,
her seamen know. And where the land she travels from? Away, far far
behind, is all that they can say.
-Arthur Hugh Clough
Today at work, I had a most unlikely but heartwarming conversation with a Norwegian ship builder. He reminded me so much of my father. We talked about Singapore, Norway, Ships... His daughters.. Orchids.. Playing music to orchids. Talking to him made me miss my dad so much.
There's something really special about men from the sea. I have had the fortune of knowing 3. My dad, Foo Aik and finally, this Norwegian man. Listening to them talk and tell their stories, I cannot help but feel so small. I feel as if, there is a world out there that is so much bigger than I can fathom. That, there is still so much that I have yet to see and experience. That, there is so much that I am missing out on.
As I listen in awe and in wide-eyed wonder, they all smile at me with a familiar twinkle in their eyes and they reassure me that life is long and that the world will be mine to see one day.
